Paris ( pronunciation : / pærɨs / in English , [ 3 ] [ paʁi ] ( help · info ) in French ) is the capital of France. Situated on the river Seine , in northern France , at the heart of the region of Île - de -France ( also known as " Paris Region " ; French: Région parisienne ) . Paris on the administrative city limits ( unchanged since 1860 ) has a population of 2,167,994 inhabitants ( January 2006 ) . [ 4 ] Paris Unité urbaine ( or urban area ) extends well beyond the administrative city limits and has an estimated population of 9.93 million ( in 2005 ) . [ 9 ] Region Paris has 36 of the Fortune Global 500 [ 10 ] in several business districts , notably La Défense , the business district the largest in Europe . Paris is the latin name of Lutetia ( / lutetja / ) , or Lutetia Parisiorum , ( French: Lutèce ( [ lytɛs ] ) ) , which is then cut to just Paris . The name is derived from the Gallic Parisii tribe , whose name probably derives from the Gallic Celts , meaning " cauldron " , but do not touch . Other authors assume the name comes from the Gallic Parisii Celt Parisio which means " work " or " craftsman . " [ 13 ] Since the beginning of the 20th century , Paris has been known as Paname ( [ panam ] ) in French slang ( j Ltspkr.pngMoi ' suis d' Paname , meaning " I'm from Paname " ) , a slang that has been popular among teenagers in recent years .
